In the Edo period, it was common to have room dividers in a lattice pattern. Thin wood or bamboo was set horizontally and vertically to create this pattern. It is said that Koushi is based on these patterns. Koushi with thicker lines represents power; Koushi with thinner lines stands for elegance.
